Expert Advice: Picking the Perfect Base for Your Campervan Conversion

When it comes to campervan conversions, selecting the right base vehicle is key.

With so many factors to consider—from interior space and layout flexibility to payload capacity and vehicle history—this is a specialist area where we are able to guide you through the process.

At SSL Conversions, our expertise means you can benefit from Liam and the teams’ knowledge and expertise every step of the way. Before you start your journey with us, here are some top tips to begin thinking about.

Our Top Base Vehicle Recommendations

We consistently recommend three models: the Citroën Relay, Peugeot Boxer, and Fiat Ducato. Despite their different branding, these vehicles share an identical chassis and dimensions, offering the best platform for conversion if spaciousness is high on your list of requirements. The Mercedes Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter are also popular choices. However, the three models we recommend are superior in some key areas.

Key Differences:

  • The Fiat Ducato comes with its own engine and gearbox and there are some automatic vehicles in circulation – although they can be hard to come by unless buying new.
  • The Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Relay share the same engine and gearbox.
  • The Mercedes Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter are often thought of as being more reliable due the perceived supremacy of German engineering. While this may hold true for cars, vans of this type tend to be more equal in terms of their reliability.

Why The Citroën Relay, Peugeot Boxer, and Fiat Ducato?

  • Width Matters: These vans offer the most interior width available, allowing for a more spacious and versatile conversion layout.
  • Flexible Bed Options: By recessing into the walls at the head and foot of the bed, you can achieve bed lengths of up to 191 cm. Even without recessing, a comfortable 180 cm bed is possible—ideal for couples who want maximum space without resorting to an overly long vehicle.
  • While they are typically narrower, the VW Crafter 2019 or newer is able to have a 185 cm long bed widthways.

Maximising Interior Space and Layout Flexibility

While many social media videos highlight the Sprinter’s interior space (often using fish-eye lenses to exaggerate the roominess), the reality is that the Relay/Boxer/Ducato models deliver practical, generous space without trickery.

Versatility

  • The extra width means you can design creative layouts, such as L-shaped lounges, that are both visually appealing and practical.
  • More space means it’s easier for two people to navigate inside, making day-to-day living more comfortable.

Key Considerations When Buying the Van for Your Conversion

Choosing a base vehicle isn’t just about the model—it’s also about its history. Here are the key points we always advise you focus on:

Usage History:

Go for a Gentle Life: Look for vans with one or two previous owners and a low-stress history. Vans used by smaller companies or tradespeople like plumbers or electricians are often preferable to those used by larger, heavy-duty operations.

Service, Previous owners and Mileage: Fewer owners, lower mileage and a full service history not only give a good indication of a robust vehicle but also protect your asset’s resale value.

Expert Checks:

Take an expert along: it may be a good idea to bring someone knowledgeable along or have a trusted organization like AA or RAC perform a pre-purchase check. They will charge for this service but if it helps you avoid issues down the road it is a wise investment.

Dealer Reputation:

Do your research: A quick Google search for reviews can save you from potential headaches later. A reputable dealer with verified reviews is a must for peace of mind. If a dealer has a limited online presence it is worth avoiding them – even if the vehicle on offer ticks all the boxes.

Weight Distribution, Payload Capacity, and Legal Considerations

Payload Capacity:

  • Campervan conversions are typically built around a 3.5 tonne gross vehicle weight. However, many vehicles can be “up-plated” – you can upgrade to 3.9 tonne just by requesting this amendment from the DVLA. You can go up to 4.5 tonne by adding air suspension, and having this recorded on the vehicle’s V5 log book by the DVLA.
  • Why It Matters: Keeping within legal limits is not just about following regulations; it’s also about ensuring safety and performance when you’re out on the road. A conversion adds a lot of weight to a vehicle so in the interests of safety it is good not to exceed the maximum safe payload of the vehicle and compromise its stability.

Legal Implications and Licensing:

  • Vehicle modifications might affect your licensing requirements. For example, heavier vans may require a C1 license. This is particularly relevant for drivers who gained their licence after 1997 and so may not be allowed to drive vehicles over a certain size or weight.
  • Expert Advice: At SSL Conversions, we guide you through these complexities, ensuring your conversion complies with all legal standards. We will consider every factor at all stages of the build process.

Final Thoughts: Trust the Experts
